Session 1A 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM What My Camera Taught Me About Lighting Design Presenter: Tim Ryan A camera is often described as a “tool for seeing the world” because it encourages people to actively observe and appreciate the details of their surroundings, essentially teaching them to “see without a camera” by paying close attention to COMPOSITION and LIGHT. This idea is particularly attributed to photographer Dorothea Lange, who famously said, “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera”. In this session I will share with you how my photographic journey has helped shape my landscape lighting design style over the past 20 years and will encourage you to pick up a camera to perhaps help you see your LIGHTING DESIGNS with fresh eyes. About Tim Ryan: Tim Ryan is the Executive Director and a Senior Lighting Designer at Lighthouse Design Studio. With a background in landscape design and construction, Tim's passion for lighting began early in his career as he integrated illumination into his landscape projects. By 2003, captivated by the transformative power of light in outdoor spaces, he transitioned fully into the world of landscape lighting. Since 2015, Tim has been an executive manager with Lighthouse, where he collaborates with top-tier professionals in landscape design, home integration, and architecture to push the boundaries of lighting design. He is also deeply committed to the education and mentorship of future outdoor lighting designers, actively engaging with the industry’s leading educational organizations to ensure the continued growth and refinement of this specialized art form. | Session 1B 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Color mixing, DMX and Creating Captivating Lighting Designs Presenter: Dave Young This session will discuss how color mixing works using LEDs to create exciting designs. Landscape lighting can use color effectively to enhance a client's environment. Use of color doesn't mean the project has to look like a theme park. Why are amber, cyan and lime LEDs important to get a greater range of colors. About Dave Young: Dave Young is the National Controls Manager for Traxon | e:cue. He holds a BA in Theatrical Design from Alma College and an MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to joining Traxon in 2024, he worked as the Western Architectural Regional Manager for ETC, and as an architectural lighting designer at Visual Terrain and then Stantec in Los Angeles. An active member of the lighting community, Dave has been a presenter at the IES Annual Conference, LIGHTFAIR® International, ArchLight Summit, and several other lighting industry conferences. Dave also served as the chair of the IES Annual Conference from 2020-2023. |

His sales background comes from spending 15 years in financial services, in addition to selling lighting in entertainment, residential, and commercial projects. Attendees will leave with practical insights on how to navigate challenges, streamline workflows, and leverage each other’s expertise to deliver stunning and sustainable landscapes that light up both the environment and the user experience. | Session 3B 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM An Introduction to Color Rendition and IES TM-30 Presenter: Dr. Tony Esposito, Ph.D. This presentation will provide an overview of the fundamental concepts of color rendition, describe the function (and drawbacks) of the CIE General Color Rendering Index (colloquially "CRI"), and detail the IES method for light course color rendition, IES TM-30. With a focus on fundamentals and lighting application guidance, attendees will leave this talk feeling more comfortable navigating the world of color science. About Dr. Tony Esposito: Dr. Esposito is light quality researcher with a background in lighting design and engineering. He is the Director and Light Concept Lead at the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the Founder of Lighting Research Solutions LLC (a lighting consultancy providing services in research, education, and development), and Co-Chair of the Color Committee of the Illuminating Engineering Society. |
