Janet Lennox Moyer

Our Founder, Janet Lennox Moyer, FIALD, COLD, is an internationally known lighting designer.  Jan is the recipient of many design awards, has judged many lighting competitions, and has been published extensively in magazines, newspapers, and books.  Ms. Moyer’s work has included interior, commercial, and residential lighting, but her emphasis shifted to landscape lighting in 1983.

Originally serving as a teaching assistant for her undergraduate lighting course at Michigan State University, Jan went on to teach landscape lighting at UC Berkeley and Rutgers University in the Landscape Continuing Education departments during the 1980-1990s.  Subsequently, Jan relocated to New York to teach at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  It was RPI’s Lighting Research Center that offered Jan the opportunity to develop a hands-on course.  In 2010, she founded the International Landscape Lighting Institute.

Ms. Moyer has lectured extensively on landscape lighting across the US and around the world.  She has also created a video lecture series, Learning to Light the Night, and in 2023 joined ILLI for the Assumption University, AU Gold night, Light up in the garden event in Bangkok Thailand with other ILLI mentors.

Jan is the author of the internationally acclaimed The Landscape Lighting Book, originally published in 1992 by John Wiley and Sons, now in its 3rd edition with expanded information on documentation, garden evolution, and an extensive drawing appendix.  In 2022 Jan released a new book, The Art of Landscape Lighting, showcasing her over 45 years of design.  This book includes over 800 color photos, detail drawings, and Jan’s approach to projects needs and challenges.  She is committed to sharing her knowledge to educate others, enabling them to bring beauty to garden spaces after dark.  Janet Lennox Moyer continues to raise the bar for the landscape lighting industry.
